In her recent book, Self Compassion: The Proven Power of Being Kind to Yourself, Kristin Neff, Ph.D writes about an experiment that involved people who suffer from acne. Folks who deal with chronic acne often experience major shame and self judgement.
Researchers found that acne sufferers who wrote compassionate letters to themselves as well as challenged their harsh inner critic, had significantly less sensations of burning and stinging two weeks later. In addition, they also felt less shame and depression.
