We chose a white owl to represent The High Priestess for its wisdom and knowing watchfulness. As a spirit animal, the white owl sees past illusion and deception. It has the ability to see in the dark into what is hidden, illuminating true motives. The Romans believed if you placed one of its feathers on the pillow of a sleeping person, they would tell you their secrets.
Symbolism
Night: The High Priestess relies on all her senses in order to arrive at truth. She understands that you can’t always see things, but you can feel them. She trusts her gut that strongly guides her.
Pomegranates relate to the underworld, whose seeds helped Persephone become Queen of the Underworld. The underworld includes deep memory, childhood conditioning and ancestral inheritance that we carry with us that subconsciously informs many of the choices we make. The High Priestess has a direct passage to this world. It’s called her intuition.
For this reason, she wears a compass around her neck. It’s her internal guidance system: another word for intuition.
Astrology
The High Priestess is ruled by the Moon which relates to deep memory, instinct and feelings of comfort and security.
